Emotive Artwork for Dark Interiors
The Loft Space Studio was born from a single idea.. that the energy of the natural world could live within our homes. Founded by artist Hayley Anne Montague, the studio began as a converted loft overlooking the shifting landscape of Essex. It became both a physical and creative space: part gallery, part sanctuary, where paintings grow from the rhythm of weather and light.
THE LOFT SPACE STUDIO
Where the wild meets the interior
Hayley Anne Montague is a contemporary painter whose work moves between botanical abstraction and gestural landscape painting. Rooted in the British environment, her practice explores the expressive rhythm of nature through layered mark-making, texture, and movement.
Working intuitively, she translates the feeling of the wild — the shift of weather, the structure of foliage, the quiet persistence of growth — into works that bridge emotion and place. Her paintings capture the tension between stillness and motion, inviting the viewer to experience the living landscape through colour, rhythm, and depth.
Montague’s work sits comfortably within contemporary abstraction while retaining an elemental link to nature. Each piece carries the atmosphere of the outdoors inward, transforming interior spaces with the same energy and presence found in the wild.
Guided by a belief that art should feel as alive as the spaces it inhabits, Montague creates wild botanical paintings for dark and atmospheric interiors — works that complement rich palettes, layered textures, and homes that embrace depth and contrast.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Emotion into form
There is a quiet contradiction at the heart of Montague’s work. Drawn equally to noise and stillness, she paints from that tension — the same pulse that moves through weather, light, and the shifting moods of the natural world.
Her background in English Literature and design has shaped her visual language: thoughtful, tactile, and instinctively narrative. When not in the studio, she finds renewal in long walks, animals, and the restorative rhythm of rain.
“Perhaps that’s why I love the darker months,” she says. “Autumn feels like exhale — the colour deepens, the air steadies, and everything returns to its natural pace.”
A Natural Process
Each piece begins outdoors. Sketches, photographs, and fragments of colour collected on walks through the British countryside form the groundwork for new paintings. Back in the studio, those impressions are layered with intuition — paint meeting canvas in gestures that feel both deliberate and spontaneous.
Texture is central. Pigment, wood, and surface are chosen for their character, not perfection. Many works are designed alongside interior concepts — where painted furniture, wall panels, and art form part of a single, atmospheric composition.
Bold Interiors
The Loft Space Studio is both an art practice and a philosophy - a celebration of depth, imperfection, and the emotional resonance of the natural world.
Each piece is made to live with you - to hold the same movement, calm, and contrast that exists outside.
Work is available to view in Galleries in London and Norfolk. See the events page for upcoming exhibitions.
